Early Life and Family

Tabassum Fatima Hashmi, better known by her stage name Tabu, was born on November 4, 1971 (some sources indicate 1970) in Hyderabad, India. She grew up in a Muslim family alongside her older sister, Farha Naaz. After her parents divorced when she was three, Tabu and her mother relocated to Mumbai.

One branch of Tabu's family had ties to education: her paternal grandfather was a mathematics professor, her paternal grandmother taught English literature, and her mother was a schoolteacher. The other branch was involved in film: her maternal aunts, Shabana and Tanvi Azmi, were actresses, while her maternal uncle, Baba Azmi, was a cinematographer. Influenced by the latter, Tabu and Farha embarked on acting careers, adopting the stage names Tabu and Fara.
