Following a historic swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at the Luzerne County Courthouse, the five female judges on the county bench gathered on the steps of the rotunda to pose for a photo.
With the election of former Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis and former state Rep. Tarah Toohil, Luzerne County now has an equal number of men and women judges for the first time.
“It’s an honor to be part of it. Luzerne County is really paving the way for other counties in Pennsylvania,” Salavantis said. “I love seeing strong women stepping up.”
After a year stint, Salavantis resigned as district attorney earlier this year after announcing she planned to run for Luzerne County judge.
Toohil served 11 years representing the th District in the state House or Representatives. A special election is expected to be held in May to replace her in the state legislature.
